Environmental Noise Mitigation from Emergency Power Generator
A university recently constructed a new research facility equipped with an emergency power generator sized to support full-building operations, addressing both extensive refrigeration requirements and frequent weather-related power outages. Following project completion, NCE was contacted to reduce sound levels generated by the facility, including noise from the outdoor, acoustically enclosed generator.
Due to the generator design and location, noise mitigation options were limited. NCE conducted detailed field testing to measure noise contributions from the intake, discharge, exhaust, and casing. These results were incorporated into a noise propagation model to evaluate feasible mitigation strategies and predict overall sound performance.
To achieve the required reduction, sound-absorbing materials were installed on surrounding concrete walls and railings. The implemented solution successfully reduced noise levels, bringing the facility into compliance with applicable sound limits.
